What Happens at a Paint Party? A First-Timer’s Guide
At a paint party, a group works on a painting together while an instructor demonstrates the steps. You follow along, make your own color and detail choices, and take your canvas home. Paint Party by Teresa events are beginner friendly, so you can come even if you have never held a paintbrush.
Before you arrive
Look at the event listing for the painting, location, time, and any event-specific instructions. Choose a design you like; you do not need to know how to paint it already. Wear something comfortable that you would not mind getting a small spot of acrylic paint on, and arrive with enough time to settle in.
Events can vary. Some are in person in the Tulsa area, while online paint parties let you follow Teresa from home. The listing is the best place to check the details of the particular event you want to attend.
The painting begins with one manageable step
You will see the finished project, then Teresa guides the group through it in smaller parts. You might begin with a background or a large shape before moving to the finer details. There is time to rinse a brush, change colors, and look at the example as you work.
It is normal for a painting to look unfinished halfway through. Backgrounds, shapes, and highlights come together over several steps. If you are unsure what to do next, ask. You are there to learn and enjoy the experience.
Your canvas can look like yours
The example is a guide, not a test. You might choose a different shade for a flower, add an extra leaf, or make a sky brighter. Your neighbor's canvas will probably look a little different from yours, and both can be lovely.
If a brushstroke goes somewhere unexpected, take a breath. Once acrylic paint dries, you can often cover a mark, reshape an edge, or turn it into another detail. Our beginner canvas painting tips explain a few simple ways to keep going.
At the end of the event
Give your canvas a moment to dry enough for careful handling, and follow any instructions for taking it home. A group photo is a fun way to see how many different paintings grew from the same lesson. You leave with artwork you made and a little more confidence to try another project.
If you would rather start at home, a one-time art kit offers a pre-traced project and supplies you can use on your own schedule.
